Andy and Tang Yi watch Big K being arrested on CCTV from the back room of the bar and Andy shows he is not someone to be messed with when he says, "These people trying to sell drugs in my territory, they really don't want to live anymore."
Tang Yi arrives home to find Meng Shao Fei pulling faces at his security cameras like a brat. The quiet scene of them drinking tea in a cafe that follows is THE scene which sold me on them as a couple when I first watched. The look of joy on Meng Shao Fei's face when Tang Yi tells him Andy has a boyfriend is a sight to behold.

The next day Ah De tries to confess his feelings to Tang Yi, but Tang Yi is very clear with him that he only sees him as a brother, thereby breaking his heart. Meng Shao Fei turns up for a happy slo-mo jog with Tang Yi, but the fun doesn't last for long because someone starts shooting at them.
At the police station, Jack turns up to drag Zhao Zi off for lunch, and once they're back at Zhao Zi's house I get hit by sudden feelings about Jack wearing Zhao Zi's grandma's apron. Jack discovers that Zhao Zi is a) a virgin and b) has never been kissed. (In my notes I accidentally wrote down, "Kenny has never been kissed" - that too, though not for long!)
Back at Tang Yi's house, Zuo Hong Ye turns up intensely worried that someone has tried to kill him and in the confrontation that follows Tang Yi confirms that he and Meng Shao Fei - in Meng Shao Fei's words - are "half friends." Gu Dao Yi takes Zuo Hong Ye off to eat icecream and vent some more.
Jack persuades Meng Shao Fei to get Zhao Zi to come over and check Tang Yi's security system and Meng Shao Fei agrees because... he thinks Zhao Zi should hit that? Then Zuo Hong Ye riles up Meng Shao Fei by claiming that Li Li Zhen was taking bribes from the Hsin Tian Group. Meng Shao Fei puts his hand on her arm and Tang Yi pops out of nowhere and hurls him pretty forcefully to the floor.
A little later, Tang Yi apologises to Meng Shao Fei on Zuo Hong Ye's behalf. When Meng Shao Fei won't stop blustering, Tang Yi realises that the only way to shut him up (well. one of the few ways) is to THROW HIM ON THE BED, literally sit on him and get his hands all over him with the flimsy excuse of rubbing ~salve all over his bruised back.

THIS SHOW.

Meng Shao Fei is pretty clearly getting turned on by it (he makes this little movement on the bed and, uh, FNARGLE) and has a minor freak out, throwing Tang Yi out of the room.
The next day, Andy shows up to give Tang Yi some information, looking impressively debauched considering it seems to be first thing in the morning.

Ah De tries to throw Meng Shao Fei's feelings for Tang Yi in his face, but Meng Shao Fei just outright says "Yes, I like your boss" (I LOVE HIM) and then puts Ah De on the ground very effectively. The episode ends, however, with them briefly putting aside their differences to spy jealously on Andy giving Tang Yi a temple massage.

msf: who, zhao zi? he's my best friend! he's a great cop. very good with electronics, too.
jack: great! so, if i wanted his help with anything - say, we needed a specialist to set up a new security system at the house - would you give him a call and tell him to come over and...?
msf: that is an excellent idea. of course, i'm here to keep tang yi safe and will go with him whenever he leaves the house, but additional precautions at his place of residence are just as important. i will call zhao zi immediately. good thinking, jack!
jack: ...you know what, i'll take it.

I was under the impression that TY has always known that Ah-De has feelings for him (he's even more obvious about them than MSF), so I presume that Ah-De trying again and TY rejecting him again is a thing that keeps happening, and perhaps has been happening for quite some time now. I got the impression that the only reason TY keeps him around is because he's useful, and well-connected with the rest of the syndicate.
At the police station, Jack turns up to drag Zhao Zi off for lunch
OMG...Jack in those sunglasses... *fans self*
Also, the exchange here between Jack and Jun Wei is so hilarious in itself, but so much more funny the second time that Jack comes back. I also love that Ah-Zhi is the one that yanks Jun Wei aside, as if it's TOTALLY OKAY to leave your colleague alone with his abductor from a few days ago, because it's cool, Jack clearly has a crush on ZZ. (OMG, Ah-Zhi and Jun Wei, you guys are the worst coworkers!) I love that Jun Wei's smile is like 'Oh, I get what's happening. Have fun, see ya' later!'
I like that Jack's willingness to show up and wait in front of the police station, as well as approach ZZ when he's hanging out with his work buddies means that Jack is 110% willing to be read as having a crush on ZZ.
and once they're back at Zhao Zi's house I get hit by sudden feelings about Jack wearing Zhao Zi's grandma's apron.
I have so many feels about Jack in grandma's apron. When he's asking about it being made for a woman, he's clearly trying to see if there's a female significant other in ZZ's life, but he doesn't mind wearing it, at all. And he looks absolutely adorable and soft in it. (Jack in a pink bear apron is...probably the thing I love most about this show. Badass mafia guy, but cute apron. REAL MEN WEAR PINK.)
(In my notes I accidentally wrote down, "Kenny has never been kissed" - that too, though not for long!)
HAHAHAHAAAAAA! Yes, that too. XDDDDDDD
The end of this scene is where I am convinced that Jack goes, "OH NO, I'm actually in love with ZZ."
and Meng Shao Fei agrees because... he thinks Zhao Zi should hit that?
I think we have established earlier that ZZ has the
bestworst colleagues, and they all somehow think that ZZ should hit that, so I guess MSF agrees. ...it's such a bad call, but also such a good call at the same time? UNIT THREE IS A DISASTER, GUYS.A little later, Tang Yi apologises to Meng Shao Fei on Zuo Hong Ye's behalf.
A little later, after Jack says, "Hey, you seem to want to hit that"...
#1 TANGFEI FANBOY
Meng Shao Fei is pretty clearly getting turned on by it (he makes this little movement on the bed and, uh, FNARGLE)
FNARGLE, and JACK'S VOICE going, "You seem to want to hit that..."
MSF actually accepts it pretty quickly, because the day after he's all like "Yeah, I like your boss, and you suck at fighting" with Ah-De. XDDDD
Oh yeah, quick rewind, since this is also the first time we see Chen Wen Hao...
He Hang hands over some stats on TY, ZHY, and GDY, and you get some info on their birthdays and ages:
Note that official Taiwanese documents use Minguo as the era name and relative years (similar to how Japan does the same), so Minguo 79 is 1990 (Tang Yi's birthday year), Minguo 81 is 1992 (Hong Ye is two years younger than Tang Yi), and Minguo 67 is 1978 (which makes Gu Dao Yi 14 years Hong Ye's senior. I think he's right to be a little cautious with her with that age gap!)
What are our thoughts around the information that Andy passes to Tang Yi in terms of who assaulted and handcuffed him and MSF? Are we in agreement that it was probably He Hang's faction of Xin Tian Meng, who are switching loyalties? I've never quite been able to figure this out...

Date: 16 Jan 2020 01:27 (UTC)I was under the impression that TY has always known that Ah-De has feelings for him (he's even more obvious about them than MSF) - i wonder if we're supposed to read li zhi de's character as self-hating (he calls msf's feelings for tang yi disgusting in this episode).
(hiding this in case anyone hasn't seen the later eps yet, and CW for speculation about homophobia)... but when he drugs tang yi and attacks him, he sounds desperate and unhinged beyond a case of jealousy/unrequited love. i wonder if falling for his comfortable-in-his-own-skin bisexual boss had brought out both li zhi de's obsession with tang yi and some internalized homophobia that he tries to cope with through violence :(
Also, the exchange here between Jack and Jun Wei is so hilarious in itself, but so much more funny the second time that Jack comes back. - LOL YES!!! unit three, your priorities are RIDICULOUS and we salute you :D :D :D
I like that Jack's willingness to show up and wait in front of the police station, as well as approach ZZ when he's hanging out with his work buddies means that Jack is 110% willing to be read as having a crush on ZZ. - it is so overt, i love it! i also respect that, should anyone from the gang spot jack courting zz so openly, jack can 100% say he's getting an in with/corrupting a cop and it will sound believable to the bad guys. (he'd use ALL the innuendo when providing said explanation, of course.)
I have so many feels about Jack in grandma's apron. When he's asking about it being made for a woman, he's clearly trying to see if there's a female significant other in ZZ's life, but he doesn't mind wearing it, at all. - THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND TRUE <333
(i also really like a moment later on when jack picks up a toy gun and aims at zz, which is such an open declaration of "WE'RE JUST PLAYING WITH THAT COPS AND GANGSTERS STUFF, THIS LUNCH IS WHAT'S REAL" in my head, and it's jack being playful about something that's extremely srs bsns in his life & rather recent history, and - yeah, i get a little emo about it)
Are we in agreement that it was probably He Hang's faction of Xin Tian Meng, who are switching loyalties? - because tang yi says "i really didn't think it would be him" i tend to agree: it's one of his own people, perhaps the guy we see in this meeting with cwh (is that heng hao?), someone he thought he could trust. we don't really see him interacting w that dude though, so the betrayal doesn't feel as visceral (rushed storytelling, maybe?) but it sounds about right.
OH - thanks for pointing out the ages, and the age difference between hong ye and gu dao yi. i assumed it was somewhere around 20yrs, so it's good to have an actual number.

Date: 24 Jan 2020 22:00 (UTC)TY has completely signed up to this and knows he's going to have MSF (soon). I love it. There's also something with the Viki subtitles when TY complements MSF on the sweatshirt - I think he's saying the shirt is cute, but the subs say "she's cute" (as in Yu-Qi).
This seems entirely plausible. He's got a disturbing edge of desperation in his attempts at romantic/sexual dealings with TY that seem to point to some serious ISSUES. He really doesn't seem comfortable with himself or his sexuality.

I thought it was Ah-De? Which is why Tang Yi is so angry at the drugging and assault but (imo) doesn't seem surprised. He's also angry at himself for not being more on his guard.

Date: 16 Jan 2020 00:30 (UTC)Andy and Tang Yi watch Big K being arrested on CCTV from the back room - my craving for the andy spinoff: back room chronicles continues at full force :D (also i LOVE LOVE LOVE the way andy teases tang yi by pulling on his tie and making him laugh, augh they are SO GOOD TO ME)
The quiet scene of them drinking tea in a cafe that follows is THE scene which sold me on them as a couple when I first watched. - and it is SUCH a beautiful follow-up to their previous scene of eating together, when they're still SO awkward but already gravitating into each other! (btw may i snag these screencaps for icon-making purposes?) i always laugh when tang yi explains that andy is a FRIEND, and msf's reaction is "...i could be your friend!" OH BOY YOU GOT IT SO BAD AND YOU ARE ONLY BEGINNING TO REALIZE IT <3
Zuo Hong Ye turns up intensely worried that someone has tried to kill him - i really like her in this scene: she's very reasonably worried, and also has the BEST chemistry with msf who brings some serious little brother energy to their interaction. they've obviously crossed paths before (maybe msf tried to question her after the murders 4 yrs ago?), they do NOT like each other, and their bickering is great. i also really like that they're both super annoying re: the doctor, who sighs and draws the parallel and then LEAVES bc he's not there for this family drama at all, hahaha <3
Meng Shao Fei puts his hand on her arm and Tang Yi pops out of nowhere and hurls him pretty forcefully to the floor. - this scene is pretty telling, in that perceived-as-threatening physical contact elicits such a violent reaction (and that hong ye uses the situation so blatantly to make msf look bad... gotta admit i don't like her manipulative side at all). it makes a lot more sense later on when we learn how tang yi and hong ye first met and how they grew up together, but... yeah, not pleasant.
but then we get the apology and the MASSAGE SCENE, which is WAYYYYY more pleasant!
Meng Shao Fei is pretty clearly getting turned on by it (he makes this little movement on the bed and, uh, FNARGLE) - i second that FNARGLE and omg he FINALLY GETS IT, SOMEBODY THROW THIS GUY A PARADE :DDDDD also very special thanks to jack, who would make a GREAT yenta if he weren't an excellent mercenary/househusband to be :D
btw the scene in the car, where msf is trying not to stare at tang yi and being adorably ridiculous about it, and tang yi non-verbally letting him know that his thirst is VERY WELCOME and WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF (thank you, bottled water, for all your symbolic hard work) - *kisses fingers*
The next day, Andy shows up to give Tang Yi some information, looking impressively debauched considering it seems to be first thing in the morning. - i just fucking love andy SO MUCH y'all
Meng Shao Fei just outright says "Yes, I like your boss" - YES THIS IS SO GREAT, GOOD ON YOU MSF FOR GOING ZERO TO SIXTY OVERNIGHT <3
The episode ends, however, with them briefly putting aside their differences to spy jealously on Andy giving Tang Yi a temple massage. - have i mentioned how i feel about andy, i fear i might be TOO SUBTLE ABOUT IT
(btw, as much as it amuses me that the last shot is super suggestive of a blow job about to happen... andy seems to be getting on his knees to pick up the piece of paper with INCRIMINATING INFORMATION ON IT which tang yi just hurled to the floor in anger. oh, tang yi, just a BIT dramatic and not as cautious as a mob boss ought to be.)

GOOD ON YOU MSF FOR GOING ZERO TO SIXTY OVERNIGHT
Now I want the fic where you're in his head overnight while he really lets himself think about it - about how much he likes spending time with Tang Yi, how much he wants to protect him, the feeling of him pinning him to the bed and running his hands all over his skin...

And although this was a shooting attempt, he actually only has a nasty cut. I do see why Hong Ye is concerned but it seemed just a little bit too much. Sorry!

Maybe Andy was a gang boss (or gang scion?) once and went legit, but like Tang Yi, those instincts don't die. That's how they all knew each other (and Andy's boyfriend), 'cos all baby gang bosses magically know each other.

Date: 24 Jan 2020 22:14 (UTC)Well, who doesn't love a soft-focus slow-mo couples montage sequence? I especially like the way that they seem to be lovingly, playfully being competitive over who is ahead - each speeding up in turn.
I'm not sure that deep massage is what I'd want to treat nasty scrapes! (N.B. This scene very much reminds me of Shen Wei rubbing a mysterious "tonic" on to Zhao Yunlan's arm in Guardian - which also seemed a perplexing treatment to me.)
Yay for MSF being lovely and bold and brave (both here and earlier when he goes to talk to TY after the club raid about Andy), plus another shot of competent cop MSF who's good at subduing bad guys.
Just HOW MUCH luggage does MSF bring for a few days' protection duty?? That's him basically moving in, right?
Can I say how endearing I find it when MSF makes those bold statements about himself in the third person? If anyone else did this, it would be annoying and pretentious and you'd want to deck them. He's just adorable, though.
This second time of watching, I see why Hong He brings up TY's origins with Chen Wenhao. Foreshadowing much?
