I think that language has evolved to the point where 'fifth wheel' applies for groups and 'third wheel' for couples? But agree that 'fifth wheel' was the original term.

I don't know the exact origin of 'lightbulb', but I wonder if it comes from the 'how many people does it take to change a lightbulb sentiment'?
